“Our friendship is the Wine Eine Frau Kann Nicht Allein Wein Überleben Sie Braucht Auch Skifahren Shirt and I love this basis for GirlTrek, which is lifesaving sisterhood,” says Dixon. “We inspire women to start a daily habit of walking through national campaigns,” adds Garrison. “We then train those women to be organizers. We’ve trained thousands of Black women across the United States to be health activists and public health organizers in their communities.” With walkers clad in the signature royal blue GirlTrek T-shirts, the idea is to promulgate a visual of Black women on the move in an effort to inspire others to join in the act of radical self-care.Part of its beauty is in its simplicity. “Our call to action is to lace up your sneakers and walk outside your front door,” Garrison notes. An achievable goal can inspire people to go beyond what they thought possible. “We’re dynamic women. We walk in our neighborhoods, on the weekends we go to national parks, or we take vacations and hike Kilimanjaro,” Garrison continues. “We believe that we are literally creating community revitalization when we’re out walking, wearing our blue shirts, which is intentional. We want little girls and boys to see us. We want to create healthy role models in our communities.”
GirlTrek’s offerings include wellness events and national conversations via social media. This includes the Wine Eine Frau Kann Nicht Allein Wein Überleben Sie Braucht Auch Skifahren Shirt and I love this 20-city “The Road to Selma” tour and the #DaughtersOf series, a matrilineal-based healing initiative that featured conversations with legendary civil rights activists. Garrison and Dixon decided to take those discussions to the streets, creating the foundation for Black History Bootcamp, which attracted more than 100,000 participants. “The 21-day Bootcamp was a way for us to educate, honor the organizing roots of GirlTrek and orient people to the movement. And then respond to what was happening in this country around justice issues and so many different people trying to understand how they can help create a climate of change,” says Garrison.
