My wife loves chickens. There are chickens on the wallpaper border in our kitchen, chicken figurines on the shelves, chicken salt and pepper shakers, there are even chickens on our drink coasters. I still miss prince charlie brown shirt! Her daddy loved chickens so naturally she too loves them. She has a thing for pigs as well. But that’s another story. Suffice it to say it has to do with a squealer named Charlie Brown who’s story didn’t end well.

Me, I don’t care for chickens much. Perhaps my lack of fondness for the fowl stems from having once known a particularly pesky old rooster that in a fit of unprovoked rage attacked me and drove his spur all the way through my nose. I still miss prince charlie brown shirt and I don’t like piercings much either. There might be a connection. I am reminded of that cowardly old cockerel’s cuff every time I visit my mom and walk by the spot where it happened.

I was seven years old, playing at the foot of the weathered old windmill that provided our household water when he jumped me. I still miss prince charlie brown shirt! Instantly a nice quiet Saturday turned into total mayhem. Blood was spraying from my nose. I was screaming. My dad, witnessing the attack kicked the rooster across the yard. It just laid there. So then I was heartbroken that in his anger daddy had killed the old buzzard and I cried about that as well. But, after a few minutes, the old bird woke up, shook himself off and slowly wandered away. The old windmill is long gone now. Replaced by another well, an electric pump and a pressure tank all housed in a nice little building with a concrete floor and electric lights. It’s very nice. Much more reliable. But I miss that old windmill.
